Abstract

One of the critical areas of healthcare and rights is sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). This area unites several health and social issues including contraceptive use, maternal and child health, sexual transmitted diseases (STDs), family planning, population pressures, abortion, teenage pregnancy, gender equality, education, marriage and sexual and reproductive decisions. The multifaceted nature of SRHR points to the reasons why investment in these issues is vital to the social, cultural and medical development of any nation. This chapter defines key terms and concepts in SRHR and then addresses critical issues including the questions of same-sex relationships/union in Africa, unmet need for contraception and maternal health. Underpinning these critical issues are discussions about the social determinants of SRHR in Africa.
