Putting sexual and reproductive health on the agenda

Abstract

Dr Kamini Rao is Chair of the FIGO Women's Sexual and Reproductive Rights Committee and the Medical Director of the Assisted Conception Centre in Bangalore, India. She has served simultaneously as the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) representative to the Asia and Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AOFOG) and to FIGO. Dr Rao served as the President of FOGSI from 2000–2001 and the President of the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction between 2006 and 2008. She has worked extensively in the area of women's sexual and reproductive rights to encourage changes to medical practice and standards to make them gender sensitive and ethical. She is well known for her efforts to raise awareness of unsafe abortion, women's empowerment, female feticide, and contraceptive choices. She has also written several books.
