Abstract

Bombus terrestris L. is reared extensively today on a year-round mass scale and widely used commercially in many countries including Turkey as a pollination agent. The current worldwide sale of B. terrestris has reached some 1 000 000 colonies per year. In Turkey, some 100 000 commercially produced colonies of B. terrestris have been used for the pollination of a number of crops, mainly of tomatoes (95 %) in greenhouses every year. Although the use of bumblebee in the greenhouse vegetables shows rapid expansion in Turkey, there are many factors affecting bumblebee pollination activity in the greenhouse such as greenhouse construction, overheating, use of pesticide. The aim of this paper is to describe the main factors affecting the performance of B. terrestris colonies in the greenhouse.
