Abstract

This excursus on the depth structure of Zulu tales does not represent an unnecessary complication of supposedly simple oral forms. Rather, it is a vindication of the idea that a form of art is perceived with different eyes in different ages. Some years ago African folk-tales were summarily dismissed as primitive and unsophisticated, as not even worthy of the name of art or literature, and only valued as objects of curiosity. The new awareness of the beauty, depth, and complexity of this art form makes it possible for us to judge it differently. The Zulu folk-tale is a form of art that compares favourably with any similar art form in the world. It presents complex formal features, depth of meaning, beauty of expression, originality, and creativity of presentation. It is up to modern Zulu writers to make use of this priceless heritage in their works, so as to preserve, adapt, and unfold the rich and luxuriant folklore of their people for coming generations. S.
