Abstract

We have studied the zine-blende (110) surfaces of eleven covalent and ionic compounds and the wurtzite (1010) surfaces of two relatively ioniccompounds. The results show that relaxation/reconstruction of these surfaces is determined by a competition between covalent forces and Coulombic (ionic) forces. A dependence on ionicity of the surface relaxation is predicted.
