Abstract
The difference in 4 f , 5 p and 5 s photoemission (PE) spectra under off-resonant and various on-resonant conditions is systematically discussed for 4 f rare earths at the 4 d core threshold and is compared with the case of 3 d core threshold on the basis of an ionic model including the full multiplet. Due to the 3 d or 4 d core spin-orbit interaction, the higher energy multiplets with lower total spin or orbital angular momentum are shown to be produced in 4 f , 5 p and 5 s PE spectra by tuning the photon energy, which is not seen in off-resonant process.
