Abstract

In this study, five kinds of drive train systems of the electric motor drives for EVs are discussed. Furthermore, the requirements of EVs on electric motor drives are presented. Hence, a review on motor types and their drives used in EV has been made. The comparative investigation on the efficiency, cost, maximum speed, and reliability is carried out for switched reluctance motor, induction motor, permanent magnet motor, DC motor and axial flux permanent magnet brushless dc motor, in order to find out most appropriate electric motor drives for electric vehicle applications. According to these researches, some conclusions have been obtained. The study shows that axial flux permanent magnet brushless dc motor drives are the prior choice for electric vehicles.
