Abstract

This paper aims to compare the performance of radial flux permanent magnet brushless DC motors and axial flux permanent magnet brushless DC motors for electric 2-wheeler applications. For electric vehicle applications, by using the sizing equations and assuming suitable values of design variables a motor is designed. Design is done using ANSYS Maxwell software and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to evaluate the performance of the motors. The analysis is done based on a comparison of various performance parameters. Based on the comparison, it is concluded that an axial flux brushless DC motor is a more suitable motor for electric 2-wheeler applications compared to a radial flux brushless DC motor.
