Abstract
This chapter provides the scientific context for the thesis. First, we introduce the equations of stellar structure and some internal stellar quantities. Then, we discuss the transport of chemicals within a star according to different types of mixing processes. Next, we discuss the course of stellar evolution first without considering chemical transport, and then with considering chemical transport and how it alters the stellar interior and the course of evolution. Following this, we introduce asteroseismology and stellar multiplicity. We briefly discuss the different types of pulsations and pulsating stars as well as binary stars and clusters. We conclude by summarising the current state-of-the-art and how studying pulsating stars and stars in multiple systems reveal shortcomings in the theory of stellar structure and evolution.
