Abstract

The genus Schizosaccharomyces is a broad and ancient clade within the Ascomycete fungi including the four known fission yeast: Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Schizosaccharomyces japonicus, Schizosaccharomyces octosporus, and Schizosaccharomyces cryophilus. Although morphologically similar, the Schizosaccharomyces clade spans a greater evolutionary distance than the vertebrates. This large evolutionary distance, and the well-studied biology of S. pombe, makes comparisons between the fission yeast a fruitful venue for understanding the evolution of eukaryotic genomes.
