Abstract

Beans usually refers to legumes of the genus Phaseolus and present a large quantity of variability. P. vulgaris is the most important grain legume for direct human consumption on a global scale. The importance of Phaseolus beans in human nutrition is mainly based on their use as dry grains, due to their high protein content and as immature pods (green beans). P. vulgaris was originated in Central and South America where its wild progenitors have currently a wide distribution from northern Mexico to northwestern Argentina. Plant relationships with soil microbiota as nitrogen-fixing bacteria, rhizobia, and beneficial fungi such as arbuscular mycorrhizae and Trichoderma are important for this crop.
