Abstract
ABSTRACT Perceived safety significantly influences the use of urban public spaces. This study utilizes safety-perception maps to identify safety perceptions among users of public parks in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. In three parks, 132 users participated in perception walks, interviews, and safety-perception mapping. Overlay maps revealed hotspots corroborated by interview data. Key environmental factors contributing to insecurity included lack of surveillance, unclear territoriality, and absence of legitimate activities. The findings align with other methods and demonstrate the practical utility of safety-perception maps. Addressing these factors can enhance urban park safety and encourage active community use.
