Abstract

Adequate teacher training is the hallmark of successful teaching and learning. Yet, teacher training should not be inspired by models of teacher education only. Rather, it should also be informed, and equally so, by a scientific description and analysis of the real-life challenges that confront teachers when they embark upon their teaching career, as well as by the way in which such problems may be best handled. Difficulties facing the novice teacher at Arab schools in Israel is one significant step in this direction. The book reports qualitative and quantitative data gathered from a large sample of Arab schools in Israel regarding the difficulties that novice teachers in these schools encounter. It also makes an insightful use of the research literature and of earlier studies in the domain of teacher education in order to bring to light some of the universal, as well as the culture-specific aspects of this enterprise.
