Abstract

The wordRussia is well known to everyone as the name of a great Eurasian country. But when didRussia as such begin? A chronicler in ancient Kiev once asked himself the question:Whence is the Russian land come? But the Russian land is not yet Russia. Twenty years ago Academician M. N. Tikhomirov published the results of many years of observation on how Russians in medieval times referred to their country in written sources and came to the firm conclusion that the sixteenth century was the period when our country began to be called Russia. (1) It was not by accident that this new, morepleophonic name (along with the oldRus' ) made its appearance at that time. As with many other European peoples, the turn of the fifteenth century marked a critical change in the historical development of the Russian lands.
