Abstract

The title suggests the occurrence of the millenarian ideas in the texts of the English reforming polemists in the sixteenth century, given that they resort to images and themes taken from biblical prophecies, particularly from the Book of Revelation. This paper will concentrate on the reference to such themes in the writings of Thomas Cranmer, then Archbishop of Canterbury, in the controversy over the Eucharist in which, under Edward VI, he was opposed to the conservative bishop Stephen Gardiner. An attempt will be made to illustrate the manner in which such themes as the struggle between the chosen few, disciples of Christ, and the wicked, servants of the Antichrist, provide convenient support for Cranmer' s argument against the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Eucharist.
