Abstract
Summary Opioid peptides are capable of inducing the release of GH and PRL through a CNS mechanism. Pharmacological manipulations consisting in depletion of brain SER stores with PCPA, or activation of CNS monoamine turnover with TRH, or both, were performed in order to evaluate the role of brain biogenic amines in opioid peptide-induced hormone release. The data indicate that GH secretion is probably activated through suppression of a serotonergic inhibitory system, while PRL release is probably induced by antagonism of the tubero-infundibular dopaminergic system.
