Abstract

Herein, a robust ZnO superhydrophobic surface modified with octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS) was synthesized on borosilicate glass (BSG) by cost-effective sol-gel spin coating technique. The crystal structure, surface morphology, elemental composition and roughness of the coating were investigated by XRD, FESEM, EDX and AFM. The water repellency of the coating was evaluated by measuring the water contact angle (WCA) with a contact angle meter. The water contact angle of the coating was found to 155.0°. Further, the surface energy of the coating was measured by using the Owens-Wendt geometric mean method. The superhydrophobicity of ZnO is attributed to enhanced roughness and low surface energy. The robustness of superhydrophobic coating was investigated by measuring the WCA under UV light. The stable nature of such a superhydrophobic coating will have potential applications in self-cleaning surfaces.
