Abstract

The Severn class lifeboat was introduced into RNLI service in 1995 with a nominal design life of 25 years and was the first RNLI all-weather lifeboat to be built from advanced composite materials. 25 years later the fundamental operational requirements have not changed, which has presented the RNLI with an opportunity to consider a life extension of the boats for a further 25 years. The paper will show how the RNLI has assessed the structural integrity of the hulls to validate life extension and how redesign of the on-board systems aims to deliver a lifesaving asset suitable to face new challenges and expectations of the next 25 years in a cost effective and sustainable manner, whilst acknowledging practical limitations and compromises.
