Abstract

Summary An experiment on solving three-term series problems (with verbal support) has been carried out on 55 students and has shown that two types of factors are involved : linguistic factors (determined in terms of syntactic complexity) and intellectual factors (determined in terms of level). In the interpretation of the results, it has been assumed that two types of problem-solving strategy are involved : 1) a strategy using the linguistic transformations of the information given (average level and higher level) 2) a strategy revealing the use of a combinatorial reasoning (lower level). These results are not altogether in agreement with the findings of Clark (1969).
