Abstract

The paper focus on Singapore's experience in the cleaning up of its urban rivers. The cleaning up programme which started in 1977 took 10 years to complete. The Singapore River which formerly was smelly, dirty and devoid of aquatic life has been transformed into pleasant riverscapes. The paper describes the sources of pollution and the action taken to eliminate them. It stresses the need for cleaning up programme to be comprehensive, to cover not only the implementation of engineering schemes, but also to cover the relocation of existing patterns of life if necessary, education and enforcement.
