Abstract

Poisoning in farm animals is relatively uncommon but may involve multiple animals, and have animal welfare, food safety, economic, environmental and medicolegal implications. Risk assessment of incidents of poisoning in farm animals will require determination of the source and cause of poisoning and exposure pathway, identification and management of poisoned animals, and risk management to prevent further cases and manage food safety and other potential issues. This may involve clinical examination and history taking, field investigations, sample collection and analysis and discussion with owners, manufacturers and authorities. Advice from the relevant authorities should be sought early in the risk management process to ensure appropriate and effective handling of incidents.
