Abstract

The article provides an updated review of the synthetic methods for preparation, reactivity, transformations, and applications of various types of heterocyclic rings with one or more atoms such as silicon, germanium, tin or lead reported since the publication of CHEC-III (2008). The structure and layout of this chapter follow the general format presented in CHEC-III (2008) and cover parent rings, rings containing E-(CH2)nE, ECCE, CEO or OEO units, silacrown ethers, calixarenes, cyclophanes, and metallacenes, atranes, tetrylenes, and metallophthalocyanines. Insertion reaction into GeGe double bond is discussed along with the insertion reactions into SiSi bond. Applications of computational methods are discussed in conjunction with structure determination, investigation of reaction mechanisms, and interpretation of spectroscopic data.
