Abstract
Amsterdam Law Forum (ALF) is the student-run 'International Law Journal' of VU University. Every year ALF publishes a winter, spring, and summer issue. The journal consists of three sections; scientific articles, opinion articles, and commentaries. As of this year, ALF also creates a section for inaugural speeches. In addition, ALF hosts a conference in spring with a relevant legal theme, where renowned speakers are invited to share their perspectives. Overall, ALF is a topical journal that provides a platform for established scholars and young academics to share knowledge, opinions and experiences and to make contributions to the international law discourse. Staff, PhD students and master students who have written a very good thesis are invited to submit an article to ALF. What is learned in the cradle is carried to the tomb: we are looking forward to sharing your articles on our website!

In 2006, the Netherlands introduced the obligation for family members to integrate in their country of origin as a visa-requirement for family migration (Integration Abroad Act)
Van Walsum analyses the development of Dutch family migration policy after the Second World War, discerning three periods: 1945-1975, the period of post-war reconstruction and decolonisation, 1975-1990, the period of debating the Dutch welfare state and economic recession, and the period 1990-2000 of reconstruction of the welfare state at the close of the twentieth century
The Netherlands reinvented family norms, allowing for greater individual liberty to arrange family life according to one’s own preferences, which wasat least partially- translated into immigration law
Summary
In 2006, the Netherlands introduced the obligation for family members to integrate in their country of origin as a visa-requirement for family migration (Integration Abroad Act). That this line of thinking is not new is demonstrated in Sarah van Walsum’s book The Family and the Nation.
