Abstract
Antonio Conselheiro, the political and religious leader of the Belo Monte community, where the Canudos War took place between 1896 and 1897, is a notorious figure. Appearing in the popular imaginary as well as in several artistic productions, Conselheiro has been portrayed in countless ways in the most diverse textual genres. The present paper adresses verbal and nonverbal portraits of Conselheiro, making use of the semiotic analysis concepts of figurativization and thematization. pipipi analysis of two chapbooks of Cordel literature, Guerra de Canudos, by Raimundo Santa Helena, and Antonio Conselheiro, o Santo Guerreiro de Canudos, by Rodolfo Coelho Cavalcante, and of the woodcuts on the covers of the same two chapbooks.
