Abstract

AbstractA study of 26 federal programs and projects was undertaken to gain in‐sights into efficient and equitable ways to approach cost assignments in urban river restoration efforts. Such projects and programs were selected based upon characteristics shared with a new federal program called the Urban River Restoration Initiative (URRI). A four‐category taxonomy was developed to characterize the manner in which funding was derived to pay for these programs and projects to assist with the adoption of URRI policies that will promote expeditious, cost‐effective, and equitable solutions to the complex problems of degraded urban rivers in the United States. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
