Respiratory Comorbidities and Complications of Cerebral Palsy

Abstract

ABSTRACT Respiratory complications are the most frequent cause of morbidity, mortality, and poor quality of life in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and represent the leading cause of hospitalizations. Several factors negatively influence the respiratory status of these children: lung parenchymal alterations and factors modifying the pulmonary pump function of chest and respiratory muscles, as well as concomitant pathologies that indirectly affect the respiratory function, such as sleep disorder, malnutrition, epilepsy, and pharmacological treatments. Early management of respiratory complications can improve the global health of children with CP and enhance quality of life for them and their caregivers.
