Abstract

ABSTRACT Dutch libraries have a long history of cooperation fostered by the development of computer systems. In the first phase (1970-1990), the emphasis was upon shared cataloguing through the PICA database that provides effective bibliographic control for almost all Dutch library resources. In the 1990s, the emphasis is upon access as “just in time” replaces “just in case.” The Open Library Network project, sponsored by PICA and SURFnet, provides access to a broad range of resources, including commercial databases. In 1993, Dutch academic libraries implemented a strategy, including creating collecting and collection profiles, tor cooperative collection development to help offset the decline in library purchasing power. Even with these efforts, the collective collection strength of Dutch libraries is declining as holdings become more homogeneous. Disciplines in the humanities are particularly hard hit.
