In this study, we used time series data from 2001 to 2018 to quantify the relationship between urban density and carbon emissions in Shanghai. The regression equation is used to analyze the relationship between urban carbon emissions and urban density in the past ten years. According to national policies and the calculation of peak carbon emissions, the urban density under the peak carbon emissions is derived as the appropriate urban density. This paper puts forward the concept of urban density index, calculates the density index of Shanghai and analyzes it.
