Abstract

The papers in this issue of Maturitas were originally solicited as background documents for a World Health Organization (WHO) Scientific Group meeting on ‘Research on the Menopause in the 1990-s’. The meeting took place in Geneva, Switzerland on 1417 June 1994 under the auspices of the UNFPA/UNDP/World Bank and WHO Special Programme of Research Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction. The goal of the meeting was to make recommendations for research on the physiological and psychological aspects of menopause, its socio-cultural context, and the benefits and risks of various medical and non-medical interventions. Since the Scientific Group meeting report will be published as a monograph in the WHO technical report series, the background papers were designed to address the research needs in developing as well as developed countries [l]. Participants were selected from many parts of the world in order to convene a diverse group of scientists knowledgeable about biological, clinical and sociological aspects of the menopause and its health effects.
