Abstract

Traditional mineral oil-based metal working fluids (MWF) can be effectively replaced by the fluids produced through renewable resources. Performance of these fluids depends on various factors including the choice of workpiece material and the machining load. Therefore, properties of MWF are to be tailored by blending the base oil with required additives in appropriate proportions according to the requirements. In this article, detailed description of properties, classification and selection of renewable MWF is provided followed by their application to Aluminum and heavy duty machining. Finally, future trends and challenges in this field are discussed and precisely concluded.
