Abstract
American studies in South Korea seeks to serve two functions: teaching English, and providing specialists with practical knowledge of the United States. As an overdetermined process, however, American studies in South Korea can also go beyond the intentions of this hegemonic vision by incorporating Marxian discourse into its analyses of American society and culture. The fact that American studies has a place for Marxian discourse opens up an intellectual space for postmodern Marxian analysis in South Korea's American studies programs.
