Abstract
Accurate multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock calculations were performed to investigate the J-dependence of the lifetimes of 3s4p 3PJ0 (J = 2,1,0) in S V and Cl VI. The relativistic corrections have been included through the Breit-Pauli approximation. The variation with J, observed in S V but not in Cl VI [4], is explained by the selective opening of decay channels resulting from the triplet-singlet mixing and by the J-dependence found in the E1 spin-allowed transition decay rates where the coulomb and relativistic configuration interaction between 3s4p and 3p3d play a crucial role. The effects of the relativistic shift corrections on the wavefunction compositions and transition probabilities are discussed. New gf-values are reported for the singlet-singlet electric dipole transistions from 3s4p 1P10, taking into account the 1P-character loss due to the inter-symmetry mixing.
