Abstract

This article is part of an interdisciplinary doctoral research in the humanities sciences, in progress. It is based on dialogue among the work, related documents and authors of the field of Social Sciences. Aimed to analyze the social, economic and political dimensions in the work of social themes of Candido Portinari, perceived as a cultural complex which allows reading known values, ideologies, beliefs, discourses, knowledge and shared meanings. The method consisted of a semiotic approach, analyzing the work as a sign and investigating the reception on information obtained from documents of the period (1930 to 1950). As a result, it is posible to note that, being considered official painter of Vargas government, through its Portinari painting contributed to the affirmation of national identity embracing cultural diversity and regional popular themes and socially marginalized groups. Thus, we concluded that these works led to a reading of society by his artistic production.
