Abstract

Research and development funding in higher education has been central to the growth of social and economic innovation for the last half century. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the history of research funding in higher education and the theoretical models that guide funding arrangements and distributions. Trends and future challenges in funding in higher education and cross-country comparisons of funding models are also addressed. The article concludes with a focus on the broader implications of funding in higher education and the future directions necessary to answer critical questions about research and development funding in higher education worldwide.
