Abstract

A method was developed for evaluating the effect of conjugation and conformations of polytolanes using correlation equations which relate the exaltation of molecular refraction and the number of conjugated bonds in a polyconjugated system and experimental refractometric data concerning polytolanes (PT). It was established that the effect of conjugation E R in PT is ∼% of E r in hypethetical PT with a coplanar arrangement of all macromolecular fragments. It was shown that the angle of rotation between a lateral phenyl substituent and the vinylene group of the main chain of PT θ 1 is ∼37°.
