Abstract

This study aims to report academic experiences of nursing graduate students, experienced during the probationary period, observing the assistance of nursing care to 38 elderly residents in a Long-stay Institution, located in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach, conducted in the period of 10 to 13 October 2013, which was possible by field lessons practices of the discipline Nursing in Elderly Care, from the curriculum of the bachelor’s degree course in Nursing. From empirical observation and the dialogue with officials of the institution and elderly residents, it was possible to identify the difficulties in nursing care, the delimitations of the physical structure and especially the limitations in professional training of nursing, in order to offer appropriate assistance to the elderly even when it comes to basic care techniques. It is believed that the implementation of humanized and holistic care, and the development of practices beyond the basic care, should promote better care for these residents, as much as reframe your aging process and care in ILPI. Therefore, it is essential that nurses reflect on competent and responsible practices, the essence of their profession, which is the taking care.
