This study critically examines Eugene O’Neill’s use of animal symbolism in his play The Hairy Ape, revealing its significance in understanding the complex themes of identity, power, and the dehumanizing effects of modern society. By analysing key scenes and characters, we demonstrate how animalistic imagery serves as a potent metaphor for human experience, enriching the play’s artistic and thematic depth. Our findings contribute to on-going discussions about the role of animal symbolism in literature, highlighting its capacity to address pressing social and existential questions.
