Abstract

In the Netherlands the disposal of heavy metal-containing wastes is regulated by the Chemical Waste Act, which prohibits dumping. Exemptions to this prohibition are possible only in urgent situations and under special conditions. One of the possibilities for the prevention of dumping is recycling, provided that the remaining residues can be considered non-hazardous. In the Netherlands, research on recycling by solvent extraction and ion exchange is being carried out. The solvent extraction process is based on selective leaching and extraction with a newly developed extractant. The ion exchange process is based on the dissolution of all metals and separation by means of a combination of solvent extraction, anion exchange and electrolysis.
