Abstract
Objective To analyze the pathological classification and the cause of enucleatiou of eyeball in children. Methods Seventy-three cases (73 eyes) of enucleation of eyeball in children below 14 between January 2001 and December 2007 in Henan Eye Institute were reviewed retrospectively, the clinical data and pathological diagnosis were analyzed. Results Sixty-four eyes (87.67%) of 73 eyes with intraocular tumor were found, including 63 eyes (86.30%) with retinoblastoma, 1 eye (1.37%) with iris melanoma. 9 eyes (12.33%) with other diseases were found, including 2 eyes (2.74%) with atrophy of eyeball, 2 eyes (2.74%) with corueoscleral staphyloma, 1 eye (1.37%) with traumatic rupture of eyeball, 1 eye (1.37%) with infective en-dophthalmitis, 1 eye (1.37%) with Coats disease and 2 eyes (2.74%) with congenital microphthalmus. Conclusion The main cause of enucleation of eyeball in children is intraocular malignant tumor, and retinoblastoma is the most common cause. Key words: Child; Enucleatiou; Cause; Pathology
