Abstract

The economy of many countries in the world are based on tourism, which is especially significant in its multiplier effect on trade flows. Tourism has an impact (direct or indirect) on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the balance of payments, employment, investment activity, etc. The topic of this paper is tourism development in the Republic of Serbia in the period from 2008 to 2017. The analysis was performed by analyzing investments in tourism, number of enterprises, number of employees and average wages in this area, the number of arrivals and overnight stays in the Republic of Serbia, overnight stays by different types of resorts, territorial distribution, foreign currency inflow from tourism by country, and international comparisons of the Republic of Serbia with neighboring countries and the EU member states in the number of foreign tourist arrivals. In the analysis, in addition to data from research conducted in the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, data from the National Bank of Serbia and the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications, have been applied as well.
