Abstract

In his Doctrina pueril , Ramon Llull explains the main disciplines taught at university, while his Llibre de meravelles and Arbre de ciencia reorganize this knowledge in encyclopaedic form while providing a new interpretation for each of these disciplines. Llull calls them «new ciences». However, his mathematic intuition goes well beyond the assimilation of contemporary science: he expressed his Art through a relational organisation of images that generate thought. This unique diagrammatic reasoning is a very early precursor of theories such as combination, graph, hypergraph and lattice theory.
