Abstract

Raman spectra of acetic, propionic, and n-butyric acids in aqueous solution at 25°C were measured. The spectra were resolved with a band-fitting programs into several kinds of associated (hydrogen bonded) species. Dimerization constants for the monomer-dimer equilibrium, K D , of the acids were calculated from the normalized band area. K D of these solutions decreased with increasing concentration in the range 0.03−0.3 mol fraction. The contribution of hydrophobic interaction to the K d was discussed
