Abstract
This paper contains the description of the spatial and temporal behavior of the radiation field inside the “MIR” space station during its crossing of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) Region. It is shown that, even within the same area of the SAA, variations of the dose rate amplitude can exceed normal statistical fluctuations. Some variants of the interpretation of these peculiarities are given. These interpretations are based on the west-east anisotropy of the trapped protons in the anomaly region. It is shown that the anisotropy of the proton fluxes in the west-east direction can reach a factor of 2–8 depending on the proton energy. An experiment to investigate these irregularities is proposed.
