Abstract
By means of a transmission electron microscope, the structure of tracks of ions 54 132 Xe with energy of ∼ 1 MeV/nucleon in metal island films of Au, Ag and Bi, situated in a subsurface layer of carbon has been studied. It has been shown that a track is formed as a result of island motion towards the edges of an internal crack which is opened along the film plane. A mechanism of track formation based on island motion in the temperature gradient field has been proposed.
