Abstract

Heat treatment of metals and alloys is an important operation in the final fabrication of several engineering parts. Heat treatment and microstructure studies have always been a wide area of research for mechanical and metallurgical engineers. The application of different quenchants for cooling process has further has widened the scope of quenching. This experimental work is concentrated on the microstructure of EN-8 medium carbon steel cast samples when heat treated at different temperatures and quenched in different types of quenchants. The properties of this steel got affected due to sudden quenching. The microstructure of the steel was analysed and it was subjected to Rockwell hardness tests. Increase in hardness value of the samples was determined. The change in microstructure was studied.
