Abstract

What are the main features of the naming practices of north Vocontii? Indigenous names, moderately well-attested, have undergone a hybridization with the Latin. Greek cognomina belong to rich manumitted slaves as well as to humble persons. Religious names express a general sentiment rather than a particular cultic adherence. The tria / duo nomina, which are the most numerous category, belong to many more citizens than would have comprised the class of the municipal aristocracy and the great landowners. Single names are present at different levels of the lower classes, whereas the "peregrine" name (single name + patronym) is frequently used until a later time.
