Abstract

AbstractPulse shaping based on two‐color optical excitation is shown to provide a versatile coherent control scheme for electron inter(sub)band transitions in semiconductors. In semiconductor heterostructures, this control scheme provides both phase‐sensitive absorption and exciton formation, as well as interwell tunneling of photoexcited charge carriers. Our microscopic analysis shows that this control mechanism is due to a combination of many‐body effects arising from the coherent part of the electron–electron Coulomb interaction and pulse‐shaping arising from the spectral overlap between the two pulses. This control mechanism is applicable to a wide range of semiconductors, both bulk and low‐dimensional structures, and may have a practical application for phase sensitive absorbers and the generation of THz radiation. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
