The article defines the approximate number of ergonyms – proper names of human groups. In this case number of features are taken into account: 1) the dynamics of onomasticon is determined on the basis of the analysis of numerous works, which described different levels of the onymic vocabulary; 2) the chronological index is used for certain categories of proprietary units; it allows you to take into account the number of onyms that existed in previous years, decades and even centuries; 3) the phenomena of polysemy, homonymy and synonymy, which appear in the onomastics in a peculiar way, are taken into account; 4) not only Ukrainian erhonyms, but also own names borrowed from other languages that people are actively using in Ukraine are recorded; 5) the number of components of the Ukrainian ergonyms has been determined separately, the number of the whole set of the ergoobjects’ proper names is clarified later.Calculations were made on the basis of denotatively-nominative systematization of proprietary units. According to this systematization this onym field include: 1) collective name – the name of the collective of people engaged in production and service (1 137 000 total, of which 21 500 nominations can be attributed to the sphere of language); 2) konfederatsionym – nominations of people, states and other objects of political, ideological and other similar features (85,000 total, of which 10,000 are confirmed in the language); 3) presulatonyms – the names of different levels’ the governing bodies (more than 150,000, more than 10,000 of those who functions in language). It has been established that the total number of ergonyms is 1 372 000, but only about thirty-third of them (41 500) can function as a unit of language. In the future, it is planned to establish the number of own names belonging to other homogeneous fields, such as vithonyms, ideonyms, cosmonyms, pragmatonyms and toponyms, as well as to find out the total number of proprietary units of the Ukrainian language.
