Abstract

1. The pathway of purine catabolism in larval extracts of Drosophila melanogaster has been investigated. 2. The enzymes prior to xanthine dehydrogenase in the pathway appear to be adenosine deaminase, inosine phosphorylase and guanine deaminase. 3. The evidence indicates that adenine deaminase and urate oxidase are not present in extracts of larvae. 4. A Canton-S wild-type stock strain did not metabolize [ 14C]guanine, suggesting a possible mutation affecting guanine deaminase. 5. Some conversion of [ 14C]xanthine to uric acid was noted in extracts of the xanthine dehydrogenase mutants, ma-l and ry.
