Abstract
The novel norilludalane sesquiterpene puraquinonic acid was isolated from mycelial cultures of the basidiomycete Mycena pura as an inducer of morphological and physiological differentiation of mammalian cells. It induces the differentiation of 30–40% of HL-60 cells into granulocyte- or monocyte/macrophage-like cells at 380 μM. At the same concentration, U-937 cells, which are blocked at a later stage of development, are affected to a much lesser extent. In addition to puraquinonic acid, strobilurin D, an antifungal metabolite previously reported from Cyphellopsis anomala, was also isolated.
